Just in time for autumn, I would like to present this awesome fine example of a coiled, mid to late 19th century Pennsylvania straw Rye Basket filled with huge sunflowers (included) that will instantly add autumn magic to your cozy home! This unique basket is taller in size compared to the more prevalent shorter versions.

These types of baskets were fashioned from rye because they resisted rot and repelled unwelcome visitors. Women also used these baskets in the kitchen for bread dough rising.

Sporting an original surface of warm nutmeg tones in the straw resulting in an earthy patina are certainly a delight! There are some dark character areas present that appear at random but are more prevalent on the inside as shown in images 14, 15 & 16. The pattern of the weave is simple yet intricate at the same time which draws interest and appreciation of the handcrafted quality fashioned by the makers hand.

There are some areas on the rim that have been effected by breaks in the splint weave as shown in images 11, 12, 17 & 18. The straw is intact which is a rarity! It is a solid, strong and durable piece made to last!

A trio of locally grown large Pennsylvania sunflowers offer just the right amount of contrasting color for the basket! There are some areas related to the sunflower heads that have experienced seed loss as shown. The petals are still intact and so are some of the leaves.

When autumn is at a close you can certainly dress this large basket for the holidays filled with either greens and berries, mittens, or freshly baked gingerbread alongside old festive cookie cutters that will make an unusual arrangement especially presented at the table. Enjoy!

Basket measures 11 ¾” across the top opening, stands 5 ¾” and is slightly out of round measuring 6” on the other side, bottom measures 6 ¼” across by 6” front to back. Sunflower heads vary in size but measures 5” to 5 ½”.

~Freight (Standard Mail) included, however Insurance is optional and can be purchased @ checkout ~ within the continental U.S.
