Exemplary coverlet attributed to John Hamelton, Nothumberland County Pennsylvania explodes with beautiful floral along with interesting foliate and heart designs that encompass the center field along with folk art birds and trees gracing the sides. Corner blocks reads, JOHN HAM / ELTON / JACKSON T. / NORTHUM / BERLAND / COUNTY / 1840 P.A.N.

John Hamelton according to recorded coverlets, was a weaver in Machenoy, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1836. From 1839 to 1844, he relocated to Jackson Township. The meaning of the P.A.N. in the corner blocks is a mystery.

This fine example having more decorative elements such as the bird motif surpasses this makers other coverlet designs. Condition is very good with minimalistic small stains that appear at random along with whispers of light toning. There is some expected fringe loss but the colors are vibrant without any fading to report. No holes are present.

Four hearts positioned in a circle are tucked inside the starburst pattern that lays directly on the center seam. Some of the starburst designs are off center point while others are on the mark. Edge lacking fringe was intentional and shows random areas that are unraveling. Primary colors consist of red, blue and pale olive.

This beautiful coverlet is just amazing and will instantly create an early look on any bed it is placed on sporting happy folk art designs.

Measures 93” tall (head to foot of bed), measures 86” across, shown on a double bed.
