Hooked Rug Hit and Miss Section Warm Earth Tones

Time to unearth the cozy blankets, quilts and rugs from the attic as the colder weather is upon us for quite some time. This late 19th century hooked rug awaits a table where it will certainly make a cozy and warm impression all winter long!

The colors are strong in this “hit and miss” patterned woolen rug lending earthy hues of nutmeg, chocolate, buttermilk, terra cotta, forest green, lamplight black with whispers of crimson red, and grey tones. It was hand fashioned by a patient person who took the time to complete it with her basket of saved woolen rag balls right by her side. Offered is a section of an incomplete hooked rug that now holds our attention as a table mat.

The top and bottom ends are bound with a pretty wool tweed sporting a chocolate brown with tiny white accents. Some of this fabric shows wear that attribute to loss along with loose threads. The sides were left raw therefore exposing the burlap. Several areas sprinkled at random have experienced wool loss. Unraveling is present on the side locations and there is one area on the back that shows a loop that has pulled away from it’s secure home along with some other raised loops located on the front.  There is a very light stain present but is hard to detect as shown in image 10.

There are no odors to report. Despite its shortcomings this textile can still make a nice presentation on a table using a favorite bowl filled with autumn pumpkins, corn and the like. You can also add greens, berries and pine cones to either a trencher or bowl for holiday decorating as well. Why not introduce this rug to the top of a blanket chest or desk incorporating old books, an inkwell and early lighting too. The size of the rug depends on where you are taking the measurements. For example the bottom and top edges measures 26 1/4” across (right to left) taking into account the loose extended ends while the middle measures 24” because of the burlap ends. Measures 25 ½” tall (ends of finished tweed areas).
