This beautiful quilt piece was my inspiration for this next offering that also comes with an old leather bound book and an early tin painted candle holder. The fabrics of choice used in this lively and colorful quilt are classic examples comprised of cinnamon pink, madder browns along with fugitive prints that resemble a quiet lilac and last but not least shirting’s. Pretty cottons include a wide variety of calico’s that date to the 1860 to 1900 period and are nice examples used during this time frame.
I implemented the use of “Warm and Natural” to sandwich the quilt and brown homespun I added on the underside to lend dimension to this mat. It was stitched up using old piled cotton thread near the raw edges that were left that way intentionally. There are no holes or stains to report. Triangles were pieced and hand stitched together to form a bold design while the geometric patterned prints seem to hold our attention. The colors are strong and there is no apparent fading.
I added an interesting tin painted civil war era candlestick that creates warmth and coziness to the scene. It has gentle floral accents (added at a later date) that resemble a crimson dot with a buttercup yellow center sporting wispy leaves trailing nearby. There is some paint loss to the drip pan more so on the bottom as shown but most of the paint is intact and this piece still makes for a showy display. The finger loop may have originally been round. However the appearance is squared off at the top and side locations. The candle is included and boasts a brown and cream homespun tie accent that matches the back of the mat. Image 10 & 11 show a small dent in the tin near the open bottom slot where the push ~ up lever resides…. which by the way does move freely. The slot area was not painted and boasts an original surface.
The last addition for this gathering is a leather bound French book entitled, “Les Aventures”, Paris dated “1816”. It sports a green marble interior on the inside cover which no longer is attached to the spine. To remedy this situation I wrapped a piece of homespun around the book tied together with a piece of variegated mustard and buttermilk wool that is accented with tiny faux daisies that present a fresh spring look. The cover has age related wear and possesses a mellow brown hue noting light and dark areas that appear at random. The inside of the pages are all accounted for without any rips to report.
This delightful gathering can call home on a side table near your favorite chair or what about placing it on the bottom shelf of a cupboard to add interest and charm. Don’t forget about the blanket chest in your bedroom that can be another option. Great gathering that will bring a fresh breath of springtime happiness to your beautiful home without delay! Enjoy!
