This sweet sampler worked by Miss Mary Hunt portrays simple form but also blesses us with a quaint meandering border executed in darker thread. This textile dates from 1820 to 1835 and was worked with silk thread on a linen ground. Of course, the frame is absolutely fabulous boasting a carved recessed floral pattern that is quite stunning!

The tawny or crushed walnut color thread appears a hint darker than the linen ground while the numbers and curved border are comprised of a cornflower blue that adds a tremendous accent feature. Scattered areas of light toning that were brought on by age are not obtrusive and seem to blend in with the linen as shown in images 4, 5, & 8. There is no thread loss, holes or fading to report!

The frame is absolutely gorgeous and really gives importance to the sampler held within. If the carving is not enough to make your heart skip a beat don’t worry as the darker accent strokes that closely mimic “grain painting” will certainly draw you in! The area of the frame that touches the glass speaks to us in soft gold highlights adding dimension and further color to this piece. The artist choose lamplight black to enhance the top of the frame.

Miss Mary’s sampler protrudes the backside with exposed edges that have been folded over and lay taught against the wood insert secured by nails. There is a piece of wood missing on the back edge, left hand side of the frame near the middle location. Tiny chips are also present on the upper corners of the frame as well as the right bottom corner. Some areas have experienced tiny chips on the front that appear white in color but all in all the frame is in good overall condition. The glass is completely intact without any cracks or chips to report.

This sampler is a smaller version and will fit just about anywhere of your choosing. I can envision this textile gracing a dresser leaned up against a wall with perhaps woven flax or wool placed in a basket laid nearby. Don’t forget to add an early candlestick along with old child’s socks that would make for a showy “themed” display in your lovely home!

Overall height is 12 ½” tall, measures 14 ½” across and is a little over ¾” thick (deep).

~Freight (Standard Mail) included, however Insurance is optional and can be purchased @ checkout ~ within the continental U.S.
