Oval Bentwood Brides Box Paint Decorated

#917

Regular price $185.50

This delightful brides box manifests bold decoration depicting a floral motif that includes tulips along with a lovely heart and is considered more of a “high country” piece. There is an inscription on the bottom but is illegible perhaps done by the groom as a personalized token of love for his bride. Dating to around the mid-19th century oxidation in the blue paint may indicate an earlier time frame compared to the floral painted accents.

This piece could have American origin. A single lapped over band dictates the construction on the lid as well as the box. Age related tight cracks appear on the top (lid) as well as one lone crack on the bottom of the box as referenced in images 10, 12 &14. A couple tiny chips are present on the bottom but are hard to detect.

There is a wavy area located on the inside rim of the lid as shown in image 16. Slight separation has occurred where the overlap meets the side of the box as indicated in image 6. Wear to the paint can be noted once the lid is removed as referenced in images 6, 7, 8 &9. An applied clear coat dictates a semi shiny surface.

Condition is still very good as this piece shows extremely well lending vibrant color expressed in the floral design against a cornflower blue ground. Makes for a showy display perhaps on a dresser in your bedroom or on a nightstand with fresh flowers placed nearby creating decadence laced with folk art charm…..the best of both worlds! Enjoy!

Measures 6 ½” across, stands 2 ½” tall and measures 3 ½” front to back.
