Box Grater with Drawer Neat

#846

Regular price $95.50

This unusual late 19th century box grater with a removable drawer is a unique piece to own because of the form and can either be hung or will rest nicely on a table or countertop. The back was carved out of one piece of wood exhibiting a graduated handle along with opposing curved sides. A wine bottle impression is clearly visible on the backside which gives us a clue that the wood used came from an advertising crate that once held bottles of wine. It is difficult to make out the brand name of the wine and the rest of the writing is illegible.

Desirable patina that sports a crushed walnut hue along with appropriate nail bleed lends extreme character to the overall look. The punched tin was done by hand and the surface conveys a dark look that we all favor. There is a small slit in the tin that may have been brought on by constant usage located in the middle as shown in image 1. The box has been affected with clusters of holes that appear at random especially near the corners as shown in images 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 17 & 18 due to bug damage that occurred long ago. There was no evidence of any active bugs when I received this piece but we treated it anyway with a one-time non-chemical formula that will last for years to come.

A split can be found on the right hand side near the back edge at the midway point as shown in images 11 & 12. This piece does show appropriate wear that includes a chip on the bottom right corner as noted in image 23. The overall appearance is still great without any cracks or chips to the upper portion of the box which lends intact form.

The washer that resides under the brass drawer knob does have a chip and possesses a verdigris patina-ed appearance as shown in image 10. The knob itself does have several small dents located in the center as referenced in images 9 & 10. There is a crack in the drawer that appears on the inside and also the bottom as shown in images 24 & 30. The drawer surface has some rough areas present as referenced in image 27.

This box grater would a nice addition to your kitchenware collection as it is a very unusual piece sporting wonderful form that will add interest to any nook in your home lending charming results. Enjoy!

Grater stands 14 1.2” tall (including the handle), box itself stands 11’’ Tall, measures 7 ½” across the front and measures 2 ¾” deep.
