Late 18th Century Walnut Box with Hooked Heart Rug

This simple box dates to the last quarter of the 18th century and was fashioned from black walnut. A hooked heart rug, old heart tin sandwich cutter and votive candle are also included.

The surface on this storage box does show wear and exhibits color variations especially on the back side as referenced in images 7 & 8. Tiny square cut, forged nails were used to construct this piece as referenced on the underside. The bottom has a small tight crack near the top right (image 21) along with a rough area on the lower left corner area (image 24). Indications of scratches are also present with a small area of wood loss (chips) located on the right lower corner as shown in image 22.

The inside hinge on the right does have some “end play” and wiggles just a bit. It appears someone at one point tried to tighten the screws. This box is still in good overall condition and would make a great storage piece especially in the craft room for paints, brushes, sewing items and the like.

The hooked rug is a nice compliment to the box and possesses an earthy color palette. This textile, fashioned from wool fabric was created in a relaxed “hit and miss” pattern. The back edges are burlap bound and secured by a wavy Zigzag stitch. It is in wonderful condition!

I used an old tin sandwich cutter in the form of a heart as a make do holder for the votive candle. Harry added a wooden base to create height for the holder that was painted lamplight black. This battery operated votive is not on a timer but rather can be switched to the “on and off” position on the back as shown in image 39.

This gathering makes for a nice display in any room and will add light to a lonely corner while incorporating warmth and interest in your lovely home!

Box measures 12 ¾” across, stands 5 ¾” tall and measures 8 ½” deep. Hooked rug measures 11” across, 8 ¼” tall and is ¼” thick. Heart tin measures 1 ½” tall, measures 2 ½” from the top of the heart to the bottom point and measures 2 ½” across @ the widest point (top). Votive candle measures 1 ½” across the bottom and stands 1 ½” tall including the flame, ½” candle itself.
