Redware is a perfect color for autumn decorating and this lively pitcher boasting recessed hearts filled with autumn dried floral accents (also included) will add instant fall flavor in your home. It is signed on the bottom by Ned Foltz, dated “1983”.
Ned Foltz grew up in Lititz, Pennsylvania and started his business full time in “1980” as a revivalist of redware pottery but did attend his first show in “1978”. Some of the pieces he created indicates a “Henry Schofield” style such as this example displaying recessed concentric hearts that seem to have a respite allowing two inches of negative space between each repeated design element.
Henry made primitive redware with an all-lead glaze and stopped production around “1940”. He worked from the 1850’s in Chester County Pennsylvania and later into the 20th century in Cecil County Maryland. He is known for his decorative approach in pieces he created that have repeated design elements whether it be vertical lines or a fluted rim, to further enhance each piece of pottery created.
Ned was especially influenced by the traditional Pennsylvania German forms and motifs that is represented in a variety of his wonderful pottery pieces. He purchased a piece of Schoefield pottery when he was only 14 years old attracted by the decorative design elements.
This small pitcher has great form and glorious rich color. There is gently crazing throughout which adds nice character. No chips or cracks to report. The inside is glazed as well and this handcrafted piece of pottery is in good condition.
I used roving wool as a filler that also aids in keeping the corn hucks, wheat, corn, acorns, tallow berries, quince and beechnut pods in place. This cheerful pitcher filled with autumn can be substituted with greens and berries for holiday decorating too. Would look pretty just about anywhere either tucked in a cupboard, on a table or even placed on the kitchen counter. Enjoy!
