You will be absolutely smitten with his folk art appeal that lends character and personality! He is artist signed on the bottom by “Thomas” and dated in the year of “1979”. The only thing he asks is for your husband to “bring home the bacon”, not him!
The artist did an amazing job by creating depth to an otherwise smooth wooden surface that renders a textured appearance which could have been implemented with a palette knife feature along with the use of Gesso. This piece is exceptionally well done lending a naïve folk art look. It has been painted on both sides and can be displayed however you choose.
There are a couple tight age cracks on the surface running in a horizontal position, one in the front just below his ear and the other on the back starting from his tail and terminates in the middle as shown in images 1 & 9. These cracks may not have penetrated the wood as it is tight and right! This weathervane may have been entirely cut from one piece of wood that includes the base as no dowels are visible on the bottom except the single dowel located in the middle that was added to support this area while also offering a further design element.
There are areas of normal wear mostly on the edge of the red base. Some of the Gesso has worn off leaving a minor chip appearance located randomly throughout. The condition is still very good and this piece shows well. Mr. Piggy is ready to make your acquaintance and promises to delight you with his warm personality! There are many decorating possibilities as far as where he ends up but he confided that he will be happy with whatever choice you make! Enjoy!
