Early 1900's Louise Douglas' Country Schoolbook, Slate, and Eraser Gathering

#562

Regular price $52.00

Little Louise Douglas of Newport News, Virginia, would have carried this English lesson book to school in the early 1900's. We were able to find a slate and eraser to add to it to make a charming country school gathering. Since we would guess that Louise was a sweet child, perhaps one day on her way to school she found some wildflowers growing along the path and picked a small bouquet for Miss Matilda, her favorite teacher! (see our version in photos below). The book is titled, "Practical Lessons in the Use of English" and this edition was printed in Boston in 1900.

The book measures 5 1/2" wide x 7 1/2" high x 1/2" thick and has illustrations of children as well as lessons. The cover is somewhat worn but still sports a pleasing dark red color. Of course, the book shows normal signs of usage but is stable and the pages are intact.

The slate measures 8 5/8" wide x 12 5/8" high and is in fine condition with no cracks or chips. The eraser is about 6" long x 2" wide -- this is the first one we have found to date and really completes this gathering.

Maybe you have a child or grandchild who would love to imagine accompanying Louise to school in her early 20th century Virginia shipbuilding community --- and if so, what a special gift this would be!
