Hooked rugs can be considered a warm and inviting textile that can adorn our walls adding color, texture along with depicting a picturesque scene. This next offering is just a beautiful folk art representation of a church out in the country with a meandering green pathway leading straight up to the door. The colors are vibrant and the unusual arch shaped top makes for a showy piece!
This early 1900 to 1940’s rug was fashioned from cotton and is in very good condition without any holes rips or tears to report. The maker chose to create a black fence instead of incorporating the traditional white color and also added some posies off to the right. A lone tree stands over to the left and also has a folksy appearance. Two black birds are soaring just above the steeple while the sun seems to have temporarily broken away from the clouds captivity. If you look closely the pale blue sky does not dominate this background but rather transitions abruptly near the top of this rug.
The back of this textile was finished using typical burlap for the edge binding that was hand stitched. There are some areas that have wear as noted in images 12, 15 & 17 indicating slight burlap loss. Overall the condition of the burlap is still intact and in good shape.
The detail and thought process the maker wove into this piece with every hooked stitch created gives us a hint that she must have been an accomplished artist. The bottom of the church is also highlighted in a bright emerald green strip to give importance to the church itself. The strap handled hardware on the door is yet another quaint detail and so is the roof done in a soft variegated elephant grey color that matches the roof on the steeple.
This entire scene is bordered in variegated black and crisp white color hues intertwined using a hit and miss pattern that is very exciting as this splendid idea implements the suggestion of a frame. The thing about art is that it must speak to you in some way either by evoking a wonderful memory or by pulling at your heart strings because you can see the beauty for yourself in a piece offered by an artist. This is a happy and cheerful textile that conveys “art underfoot” but with all of the work that went into creating this piece, it really deserves to be hung and appreciated on the wall where it will be protected and enjoyed for years to come! Enjoy!
