Apparently, the earlier versions were fashioned from sheet iron not tin and date to the later part of the 18th to early 19th century. This example shows stamped concentric circles on the bottom as well as on the damper along with a series of numbers and letters that would be easier to execute using tin.

Tinder box is complete having the damper, flint, striker and tinder consisting of flax tow. **Candle is also included.

Before matches were invented these boxes were used to light a fire by way of a striker and flint along with material (tinder) such as flax tow, dried grasses or moss. Friction matches were invented in 1826 and safety matches came later. The flint (round stone) was struck with a striker (forged metal iron piece having a “U” shape) that would project sparks activating the tinder to start burning inside the box.

The cover acting as a damper would extinguish the smoldering fire within the box. Earlier versions were fashioned from wood and exhibit a divided compartment, one for the damper and one to hold the flint, tinder and striker but did not accommodate a candle as this example does.

These boxes were still used in rural areas, outside of cities even after matches were invented as they did not have access to them. Box is complete and has well deserved dark patina. The candle socket located on the lid was a convenient feature after the fire got started as now this piece would adapt to a candle holder by evidence of a finger ring located on the side. Nifty idea!

Condition is very good with some light surface rust on the damper lid. Ring may also have been resoldered as evidenced by the shiny overlay. Wonderful addition to your early lighting collection that tells an interesting story as it is always about the history!

Overall height including the candle is 6”, box itself excluding candle stands 4” tall, measures 4 ½” across the top lid and measures 4 ¼” across the bottom.
