🦉Magic is in the air this time of year that invokes mystery and a sense of wonderment. A folk-art owl has found a home inside a “Magic Yeast Foam” box sporting graphics of a faithful owl sitting inside a crescent moon. The fabric owl is delighted with his surroundings that include hand painted tri-colored Halloween trees, acorns, a waxed pumpkin, gum balls, corn husks and lastly a handmade kitty cat to keep him company. The box is filled with dark brown excelsior to gain height and also includes a strand of twenty, pumpkin-colored battery-operated tiny lights that cast a soft glow inside. **Battery pack accepts four double A batteries (included) and has a steady or flashing effect mode on the switch. No timer.
I crafted the owl from boucle speckled wool using a pattern I drew. He is cotton stuffed and blanket stitched. Glass eyes were used that suggest a realistic look along with a twig I chose for his nose that was hand stitched using old black thread. Hand painted stars add intrigue as well as the cluster of real feathers used to fashion his wings, intentionally placed in an offset position. His brushed cotton hat was hand stitched and adds a finished and dapper appearance.
Spotted kitty also has hand painted features including her eyes and folksy mouth. Hidden wire was applied to her erect tail and legs.
Box has machine dovetailing and the graphics are strong. The right side retains a portion of the label while the back graphics are a repeat of the front. The box is in good overall condition less some tight cracks located on the bottom where there is also illegible writing done in pencil.
“Magic Yeast”, formulated by Egbert W. Gillett in 1886, was manufactured by his Northwestern Yeast Company in Chicago, which was founded in 1893 to produce both “Magic Yeast” and “Yeast Foam”. The "foam box" likely refers to the shipping crates used for these products, featuring the company's owl and moon trademark, which were important in the early 20th century. The company eventually merged in 1929 with other entities to form Standard Brands.
This gathering would look perfect tucked inside a cupboard shelf or on a stool placed near the fireplace creating a magical display come “All Hallows Eve” when at the stroke of midnight, the owl will speak offering words of wisdom like “Dissent”! Enjoy!
