🐈 Wonderful mid to late 19th century oil painting done on Academy board depicting two kittens perched on a branch housed in the original frame (no glass). Wonderful and suggestive playful, aesthetic appeal as the kitten on the right will seemingly pounce on the other kitten who is preoccupied with her bucolic view high up in the treetops. Anonymous artist signature written in pencil is hard to make out and painting was removed from the frame for more clarity.
Some paint loss near the top edge and on the bottom corner where signature is present. A vertical crack located at the top about 3 ¼” along with an additional horizontal crack at the top edge. Couple of stains present as well. A portion of the artist board label located on the back is intact but part of it is cut off. I was able to find another reference label that is legible as shown.
Provenance: From the Thomas & Gail Rockwell collection, LaGrangeville, NY. Tom is the son of the renowned American artist, Norman Rockwell and the author of many children's books. His late wife Gail, was an artist-illustrator and the daughter of Arthur E. Sudler and Janet Whitson Sudler, both early 20th century artists - she illustrated several of her husband's children's books.
Painting has great folk-art appeal and of course the kittens are really hard to resist!
