Antique Early Lighting Unusual Folding Tin Hanging Candle Lantern Mining or Travel

I just bet you have not seen anything like this before! :) I didn't either until recently and what a unusual and unique piece it is! This tin candle lantern dates to around the late 1800's to the turn of the century. It was actually used for travel because it collapses easily and can be stored when not in use. It could have been used in a Mining Camp as well.

This piece was probably machine produced and at one point may have had mica or Eisenglass shades or panels. I do not see any channels present along the edges so I presume glass inserts were non existent in this case. Another theory is it certainly could have held a small glass chimney as well. A round hole at the top of the piece could have accommodated a chimney as there is a small indented hole that would have supported the bottom. The chimney could have been inserted through the top so the candle would not blow out in the wind. Oh, if only this piece could speak!

It appears this candle lantern was once brass plated as can be seen on the bottom of image 8. There are only whispers of this plating on the inside and outside of the six tin panels. Two small oval loops located at the top of the piece hold the wire hanger securely in place.

This lantern is in very good overall condition with some little bends in the tin on just two of the panels. The tin has a wonderful dark appearance that only time can create. A very uncommon piece that will fit in perfectly with your primitive decorating style! Whether you choose to keep this piece on a table in the folding position near some old books or hang it in front of a cupboard, you can't go wrong! It definitely has a Wow factor and is a great conversation piece!

The lantern measures 8 3/4" across from end to end in a folding position, almost 9" High including the hanger, (6" without) & 5" across in a hanging position. You will need to hang this lantern about 3 1/2" away from the wall. A long hook will suffice to accommodate this distance so the lantern hangs straight.
