This very unusual Antique Gourd Vessel is not only beautiful but served a purpose for holding liquids such as wine or spirits! The gourd itself has such a pleasing primitive look while the ridges it possess add oodles of unique character. It is a very large piece and would be the focal point in any room it is place in!
The maker used a piece of leather to cover the top and hand stitched it up also using tiny strips of the same material as referenced in image 5. There is a large woven area that wraps around the top of the gourd that was hand stitched directly into the hard shell as shown in image 3. A wonderful piece of wood shaped like a "V" acts as the stopper and has incredible patina almost like you would find in a piece of antique wooden furniture. The leather handle along with the leather top that secures the stopper is somewhat fragile in certain areas as this piece was originally made to hang. To remedy this problem, Harry made a custom wooden base that accompanies this gourd to eliminate any further stress on the leather hanger. The center was recessed so the bottom of the gourd would fit snuggly inside and would sit flat as referenced in image 8.
The workmanship and attention to detail that went into creating this piece is unsurpassed and it may also be one of a kind. The overall condition is good and the gourd is free from any holes or cracks. I have never come across anything like this in all of my travels and this piece may even have American Native roots.
I can just envision this interesting vessel placed on the hearth with pumpkins sprinkled around for the autumn season or what about placing it on a farmhouse table with layers of cozy textiles underneath. This gourd could also be set out on your porch.. protected from the elements creating a rustic outdoor look like nobody's business! The possibilities are there…all you have to do is have fun and decide! Enjoy!

Overall height is 19 1/2' Tall (includes the stand measurement). The gourd itself stands 16" Tall and measures 12 1/4" across @ the widest point. Stand is 4 3/4" Tall, 9 1/2" across the top and measures 6 1/4" across the recessed area.
