Yellow ware pieces are just a pleasure to own as they lend warm characteristics of unique, monochromatic colors, patterns and designs. The simplistic form of these bowls will sometimes merge with stylized attributes as is the case with this next offering.
Bowls are just a wonderful item to own as they are not only pretty for display but were also used in the kitchen for mixing, beating and kneading. This footed bowl has whispers of a gentle surface crazing that adds immediate character and charm. Raised, stylized clover designs sporting a dot in the center are located just under the well defined outside rim that measures a little over a half an inch. This clover pattern reminds me of a cool meadow hugging the countryside landscape on a fresh spring day.
There is a raised area on one of the clovers where the clay appears to be smeared on (before the firing process), therefore the clover imprint is not present as shown in image 5. Five chocolate brown bands are located in the middle and the center band is much larger than the other contrasting "band pinstripes". As referenced in image 2, there is some gentle wear on the larger band in two places however the rest of the areas are just fine.
A tiny broken line appears on the top brown band of the bowl, see image 3, but is nonexistent anywhere else. There is some cohesive separation on the large middle band where the brown color seems to skip over a small area executed before the firing as referenced in image 4. This image also shows a tiny glaze "pop" which means a popped air bubble that burst at the surface of the glaze during firing.
The top outside rim also has a wavy area where the clay was not smoothed out properly before this piece was fired (see image 6). A very small area… also located at the top outside rim reflects a indent off to the right just below the string bean (see image 7).
The beautiful deep, rich mustard color is very pleasing and the entire bowl has a brown speckled feature scattered throughout. This piece is in very good condition without any chips, fleabites or cracks to report as it was well taken care of through the years! Hurray!
Yellow ware pieces such as this one that possess brown bands around the bowl are called annular ware which was produced between 1840 and 1900. This wonderful example of yellow ware with the clover design is not commonly found and may have been the "middle nester" as some of these bowls were sold in nesting sets comprised of graduated sizes. I am sure any table or counter top would appreciate this fine addition of pottery from long ago. Enjoy!
The bowl stands 4" tall, measures a little over 8" across the top and 4 1/2" across the bottom.
