Did you know that Yelloware is actually Earthenware made from a naturally occurring yellowish clay and ranging in color from pale yellow to mustard? This pottery was introduced to America from England in the early 19th Century. Yelloware offered durability compared to Redware and was lighter than stoneware therefore easier to handle. These pieces are considered utilitarian pottery and were a main ~ stay for kitchen pantry's of yesteryear. So interesting!
This early 1900's Yelloware bowl is fabulous and has wonderful colors boasting a rich creamy beige and squash green that have a pleasing bleed effect over the beige. The incised design on the outer edge of the bowl lends an interesting look while the four dots near the bottom add character. The outside rim also has a beautiful raised pattern of wispy vines with the same four dots randomly sprinkled throughout.
There is some light crazing on the outside of the bowl that only time can create and is more visible on the green highlights. The bowl is also marked "430" with a number "8" underneath on the bottom. There are a couple tiny chips on the raised bottom edge, one the size of a pin head the other a little larger. They are spaced about one inch apart. About three indentations or imprints are apparent on the outside rim. One is similar to a small thumbprint. The other is about one quarter of that size and is located about three inches from the first. There are a few places on the inside rim that have slight indentations as well. All have been glazed over and I assume the conditions mentioned ~ above were part of the manufacturing process. Please see image 2.
Overall condition is very good as there are no cracks to report. The inside has a wonderful creamy beige hue with some deeper crazing throughout as can be seen in image 3. This piece of pottery is absolutely beautiful as the detail is what makes it so special. Would look great in a cupboard with your existing collection or on a simple table filled with cool water, lemons and mint to refresh yourself on a hot summers day! Enjoy!
