Nice Child’s glazed cupboard fashioned from hardwood dating to the mid-19th century showing four fitted shelves that offer plenty of display opportunities and in this case, holiday is the theme. **Offerings inside are not included but can be purchased separately as noted below this copy.** Vintage German loofa tree pictured off to the right (shown in last set of images after the cupboard) is also for sale referenced below.
Great form having an applied half-moon shaped crest that has a slightly darker appearance compared to the rest of the wood. We added an old wooden pull for character’s sake. It appears the kerf marks on the back seem to indicate the use of a circular saw. There are periodic square nails along with some larger round examples.
Bottom shows recent nails my husband used to repair it as the base came off when unpacked. Apparently, there was a long shaft that penetrated the top and traveled to the bottom. This was also repaired using nails. I believe the door was a later addition and the glass was added later showing metal triangle inserts used to secure it defining this as a "make~do" piece. The back wall (top) pertaining to the first shelf has experienced a couple cracks along with a hole located under this area. Door does not fully close and there are some circular stains limited to the top shelf only.
A crack can also be found on the back (right hand side) as shown. Another existing repair (not ours) is located on the left-hand side near the bottom. Glue was used to repair the crack and a hole was apparently filled in. A piece of leather acted as a hanger evidenced on the top back edge. However, a portion of it is missing and only a small section remains secured by three nails.
Even with some of the shortcomings this piece does show well and is now secure. Perfect to set on a table or can be placed on top of a low-profile cupboard. Your collections will be safely protected behind the glass door and can easily be viewed with delight!
Cupboard stands 18 ½” tall @ tallest point (middle of crest), stands 17” tall (sides and back), measures 10” across (top crest), door measures 8” across and measures 5” deep (door ajar).
❄️ Special German loofa tree originates from the Erzgebirge region. Popular in early 20th-century (c. 1920s) this hand-crafted piece was used in Putz Christmas villages. Fashioned from dried loofah sponges and attached to wooden bases or twigs, these charming folk-art pieces were often hand-painted and pre-date Bottle Brush Trees. Loss to some of the loofa but overall condition is still good. Low relief decorative base has experienced a chip and is marked “Germany” on the bottom.
Stands 8 ½” tall, measures 2 ½” across & the widest point and is 2 ¼” deep. SOLD Cost $45.50
