Childs McGuffey Reader History Red Mittens Book Light Winter Gathering

#667

Regular price $48.75

I just love old books and cozy mittens as when paired up they create a fun gathering that can be enjoyed anywhere in our home whether it be placed on a hearth stool by a warm, inviting fire or on a side table near a favorite chair. This next gathering is offered with a book light (candleholder) Child’s reader history and of course…… soft winter woolen mittens!

This “McGuffey and his Reader’s” book, dated 1936, is a compilation of pertinent history about “McGuffey’s” life and his contribution that reached millions of children. Not only did he create a book based on the English language but also offered stories along with ethics, morals and values for children to follow. Some of the images as referenced include where he lived as a child as well as an adult. McGuffey was very successful and his first Primer was released before the civil war.

This book is in very good condition with very little surface wear as the front cover illustrated graphics are strong and beautifully done. There is an area located at the top edge of the spine where fraying is evident as shown in image 19. There are also two small indentations that look like half-moon circles on the very left edges of the front and back cover. The inside pages are all accounted for and in great condition without any writing or marks.

The contemporary book light holds a primitive, spice rubbed candle that has an aged cheesecloth base. Blue mountain juniper and berries tied with calico accent the base of the candle holder. Images 7 & 8 show the opening of the holder that can be inserted into the front cover of the book usually placed at the top so one could read by candlelight.

The hand knit, vintage, soft and warm ladies mittens presented on the book lend a cozy look. The pattern chosen is a “hit and miss” design using black as an accent against a red ground. These mittens possess a fuzzy surface considered as normal wear which dictates desirable character! They are thick and well made. A sweet “make~do” repair can be seen on the back of the mitten near the top (where your fingers would go) as referenced in image 22. A gentle bough of frosted snow tipped greens accented with tallow berries grace the front on one mitten only. No musty odors are present and there are no other holes (other than the make do repair) to report as these mittens are in good condition. I used a safety pin to keep both pairs together.

So…..find a corner of your lovely home where these mittens and book can call home! You and your homestead will surely be pleased! Enjoy!
