German Rabbit Candy Container Pulling Cart Easter Gathering

#1066

Regular price $149.50

Festive German rabbit candy container (1920’s to 1930) pulling a cart filled with cotton carrots and grass poses an opportunity by adding a great addition to your collection. Note: The hooked rug is also for sale and compliments this gathering by grounding it lending a focal point (priced separately as stated below). There is a faint mark on the bottom of the rabbit that is hard to make out but I am quite certain this rabbit has German origin along with the cart that is unmarked.

Rabbit consists of a chalkware / composition and sports lovely detailed features that include black accents on the tip of the ears, back and tail. He is hand painted and shows glass eyes.

Head is removeable while the body (open neck area) would accept the candy. Some small chips on his ears and also on edge of the neck area along with overall light wear. A note is written on the bottom as this rabbit was probably a gift. A distinct number 10 is also visible and may have been the original price back in the day. Condition is good as he shows well.

Cart was fashioned from wood along with thick paper or cardboard used for the slotted wheels. Right wheel has some creases while the left was unaffected. The front and back have an open concept while each side is secured by three vertical dowels. Nice overall condition.

The empty cart was a wonderful opportunity for me to add something special I made that coincides with the German theme using cotton. Each carrot was handmade using raw cotton compared to spun cotton as I wanted to achieve a more primitive look. All graduated carrots are lightly painted using an earthy color pallet and were designed specifically to fit in the cart.

Overall length is 9 ½” including the cart and rabbit, rabbit measures 3 ¾” long measures 3 ¾” tall to the top of his ears and measures 1 ½” across the rear. Cart measures 7 ¼” long, measures 4 ½” tall to the top of the carrots and measures almost 3” front to back. Tallest graduated set of carrots stand 5” tall while the smallest stands 3 ½” tall.

A cotton hooked rug mat (turn of the century to 1940’s) showing a foliate design, perfect for spring, fits the dimensions of the rabbit and cart perfectly (shown in last set of images). I did some repair work as the body of the rug (limited to one location) pulled away from the outside bottom binding. I remedied this by hand stitching it back together using the existing binding as the anchor. There is an area where one of the green leaves is located that has experienced some loss. Rug has a somewhat “hit and miss” shaggy appearance. I gently washed this textile but it still has some toning due to age especially around the edges. Rug measures 7 ½” tall as well as across. $45.50
