Marking Sampler Dutch signed M Somers Turkey Red Stitching

#727

Regular price $185.50

This sampler presents beautifully detailed cross stitch work that exceeds a naïve practice hand. The detailed scroll-work executed on the border is magnified by gentle open work referenced on the outer most edge. Two opposing laurel leaf wreaths accent either side of the numbers while an aesthetically pleasing scroll design graces the bottom. Four corner scroll designs act as a break in the continuous reversed “S” pattern and fills in what would otherwise be considered negative space quite nicely. This piece is signed by “M. Somers”, the maker as shown on the bottom.

The sampler was stitched in colorful turkey red thread executed on a cream linen ground and has Dutch origin. It dates to the turn of the century and is in very good condition without any thread loss, tears or holes to report. A bold floral, leaf and fruit designed paper was used on the back. There is some sticky residue left over where the paper did not entirely meet the edge of the frame.

This piece is held under glass to protect it from the elements and the grain painted frame was done by a well-known folk artist who was commissioned to create this custom frame. She did a beautiful job and the colors she used really compliment the sampler very well.

Samplers are really a work of art taught to schoolgirls at a very early age. These pieces emanate each individual child’s personality while showing their best efforts at creating something that resonates from within. The detail and chosen characteristics make them unique and certainly fun to collect! This sampler would definitely make a statement on any wall of your choosing and I am sure “M Somers” would be very proud to know her work holds high regard in someone’s home!! Enjoy!

Sampler measures 16” across (right to left), measures 14 ½” tall and is ¾” thick.
