Are you looking for something unique to add to your Halloween collection this year? If so this next offering might just be a perfect addition to a window sill that will certainly gain attention from passersby.
An old cheese box was my inspiration to create this gathering as the letters were done in a warm squash green color that say, "Sweet Girl Brand Pasteurized Processed Cheese, Net Wt 2 LBS". This box has an inviting warm patina that only time can lend. The bottom of the box along with the left side, does have some burn marks on the edge as shown in image 21 & 22. This area does not actually show and this piece does still display well. The printing is strong on all sides of the box. There is a hint of a waxy surface present however there are no odors to report.
I used a dried orange to create the pumpkin that was hand carved and the lit tea light, (battery operated that comes with an on and off switch @ the bottom), also included, really adds magic to his face. An old textile spool was used for the pumpkin to sit on and he is particularly happy with this resting place so he can keep a watchful eye on the comings and goings!
Two whisk brooms keep him company in the box and carry over the theme. The larger whisk broom is dressed in aged buttermilk wool with a burlap marker. I painted, "All Hallows Eve" on the front and covered the top of the broom with aged cheesecloth and wrapped it in such a way that this piece can still be hung by the wire. A eerie turnip hangs lazily off to the left and the curved end reminds me of turned up witches shoes!
The second old brush has a couple of burn marks on the front and back bristles as well as the back as shown in images 8, 10 & 11. Old wool was used as my canvas and three primitive pumpkins were painted on the front while blanket stitches boasting old bittersweet thread finish off the raw edges. This was glued to the front of the bush to lend an unusual look.
Of course, I had to include a darling little booklet put out by the, Lancaster Bone Fertilizer Co. dated 1911, that has a fabulous cover depicting a sheath of wheat and a flour barrel in black graphics against a rich bittersweet ground on the front. This booklet explains how this fertilizer is an important part to growing successful crops of potatoes, clover, sweet corn, strawberries, wheat and tobacco, just to name a few.
Some of the blank pages have penciled in entries of a farmer calculating the square footage of their land and the cost of using fertilizer. Very interesting little booklet that is in good condition and even has a 1911 calendar on the inside back page!
This primitive Halloween Gathering will bring enchanting magic into your home and is small enough to fit in a cupboard or any other little nook and cranny of your choosing! The cheese box measures 9" across, stands 2 3/4" Tall & is almost 3" Deep. Large Whisk Broom stands 8 1/2" Tall, measures 3 1/2" across the widest point @ the bottom, 1 1/4" across the handle & is 1 3/4" thick (Deep). The smaller brush stands 5 1/2" Tall, measures 2 3/4" across the widest point @ the bottom, 1" across the very top of the handle and is 3/4" thick (Deep). The old textile spool stands 3" tall, measures 3/4" across the top opening & 1 1/2" across the bottom opening. The dried orange pumpkin stands 2 1/2" Tall, measures 2 3/4" across the top & 2" at the bottom. Tea Light measures 1/2" across & stands almost 1 1/2" Tall to the tip of the flame. The Bone Fertilizer Book stands 5 1/4" Tall by almost 2 3/4" across.
