This interesting wall pocket dating from the 1880 to 1890 period boasts an attractive hand stitched floral design done on a brown velvet ground. An array of fancy stitches were executed such as the chain and feather stitch using variegated thread that accomplish an artful and pleasing use of design elements. The two pockets could have held spools of thread along with other related sewing necessities.
Two old needles grace the front of the bottom pocket. Age related wear on the corners surprises us with blue fabric showing through and it can’t be ruled out that this piece may have been recovered at some point using the fabric choice of velvet. Hand stitched as shown, handmade and not commonly found. Great addition to your sewing collection!!
