What a beautiful bowl that not only has great out of round form but also surprises us with a hand painted winter scene depicting a cabin in the woods on a snowy winter day. Another amazing feature is the glitter effect appearance used to highlight this scene! The wooden spoon is also included in this purchase.

This bowl was acquired from the collection of the late Carol Anderson-Castelli of Portland, Connecticut also known as “Carol’s Connecticut Farm”. She was the youngest of seven children and raised on a dairy farm in Connecticut. She loved collecting special antiques and pieces that had inherent history that represented generations of farming as well as farm life in New England and the Connecticut River Valley. I am sure she must have enjoyed this special bowl in her home that I am now presenting to you.

The log cabin flanked by two wispy opposing trees is the main focal point in this painting. The glitter accents appear mainly in the middle of the painting highlighting the cabin, trees and snow. It does have all the earmarks of folk art and is simplistic in form. There are some dark spots present that appear at random but do not detract from this hand painted scene. Areas of wear are attributed to the gentle rim lip. All in all this piece is in good condition.

The back of the bowl has a deep dark patina that is just delicious! There are some tight cracks located on the back but do not appear on the front as shown in image 15. A rough area resides on the outside rim as shown in the same image. A small hole (shown where the dark area is located) is also visible on the back as shown in image 12 as well as some patina loss (lighter in color than the overall appearance).

Image 14 notes an area where a small paint accident occurred but has faded though the years. There is also some slight wood loss on the bottom of the bowl where is touched the surface it is placed on as referenced in image 9. The honest patina is as right as rain that can only occur from years of survival and this lovely piece was well cared for. There are no chips to report.

The wooden spoon which is a great compliment to the bowl because of the dark color does have some wood loss just above the bowl where the handle starts to form on the left hand side. There are some age related cracks limited to the edge of the bowl (one is more pronounced than the others) as shown in images 18 & 20.

This bowl would make a great centerpiece for holiday decorating possibly filled with delicious apples or golden pears presented on the dinner table. When the apples are chosen by the guests the bowl will surprise them with this enchanting winter scene! This piece can be displayed throughout the winter months and even longer if you so choose. It will certainly be a nice fit for your existing bowl collections! Enjoy!

Bowl measures 12” across (right to left), measures 13” across (front to back), stands 3 ¼” tall and measures 4” across the bottom. Spoon measures 12” tall and measures 1 ½” across the bowl.
