This antique cheese mold was purchased in Sweden in the early 1980's and measures 8 1/2" tall x 5 3/4" wide x 2 1/4" deep (measurements include tenons). The four side pieces and the bottom are all constructed with mortise and tenon construction, with small hand-carved wooden pins holding the four side pieces together through the extended tenons.
Bottom constructed in the same manner. Three holes in the bottom would allow the whey to drain as the cheese was cured and molded. The bottom is intricately carved in a chevron patter which would have decorated the top of the finished cheese. Initials "A A S" appear one side which probably indicate the maker. This is an early primitive Swedish country piece in a great dry attic finish.
