What a great gathering that includes a wall shelf, paper-craft German house, bottle brush trees and a jolly snowman. This shelf does not take up much wall space and is a great alternative to table top decorating.
The shelf possesses a generous display area while the curved bracket base lends an interesting architectural element. Age is unknown but there are indications of simulated wear on the edges along with nicks and minor wood loss mostly relating to the back. The shelf has a ½” inside galley edge so the display pieces will not inadvertently escape. The color is a rustic putty mixed in with darker areas sprinkled at random. There are two holes drilled in the back so this piece can be hung properly. The openings for these holes are rough as shown.
An interesting paper covered house (except for the roof) sports a barn red color with delightful window and door accents that add plenty of detail on all four sides. All pieces have a curt dovetail feature that securely keeps the sides in place. The roof was nailed in place. It is possible that the detail regarding the shingled roof may have been printed on.
This house dating to the second quarter of the 20th century may also be of German descent but without the bottom in place which is usually where a stamp would be found it is hard to confirm but the appearance does coincide with that uncanny German character. The paper has experienced slight wear with minor loss to the second story window. The back panel does have areas of where the paper is raised with a tiny crease as referenced in image 14 under the eave. This piece is in good condition and shows very well.
Mr. anthropomorphic Snowman smoking a pipe outside on a cold winters day dressed in a black top hat accented with a bittersweet muffler adds whimsical pleasure to the scene. He is actually a salt shaker (cork intact) marked “Japan” (pre WW2). This piece is hand painted and sports a mottled texture. There is minor wear on the back brim of his hat but he is free of any chips or cracks. Condition is great!
The large bottle brush snow tipped tree has a brown appearance with a red wooden base. It is a little brittle so except slight loss to the branches when unwrapping. The medium size tree still has some old cotton attached and sports a plain wooden base. Both are in good condition. The baby tree has been though many snowstorms as there is some loss as shown.
This shelf has so many wonderful display opportunities that you can take advantage of such as draping a small garland on all three sides. When the holidays are over you can still use this shelf to hold an early candlestick with possibly old books nearby or may be inclined to bundle small collections that will create charming results. Have fun and enjoy!
Shelf measures 12” across (right to left), overall height including the bracket is 8 ½” and measures 10” front to back. Snowman stands 3” tall, measures 1 ½” across @ the widest point (arms) and base is 1” deep (front to back). Large bottle brush tree stands 6 ½” tall, measures 3” across @ the widest point (bottom of tree), base measures almost 1 ¼” across. Medium tree stands 3 ¾” tall, measures 1 ½” across @ the widest point (bottom) and base measures 1 ¼” across. Small tree stands 2 ¾” tall, measures 1 ¼” across @ the widest point (bottom) and base measures ¾” across.
