Marking Sampler Dated 1903 Worked in Turkey Red Signed and Framed
What a fabulous Cross Stitched Sampler presented just in time for the holidays! This piece would make an incredible statement in your home because of the beautiful work, color and large size!
This sampler is signed by Totoki Piroska and dated 1903. This talented maker executed the stitches with precise form and style. I believe this was worked on wool as the grid area has tiny boxes on a buttermilk cream ground. The turkey red wool thread used is striking against this neutral color! It appears she may have run out of the red as the bottom portion of the "q" was worked in mustard wool thread which continues to the end of the sampler.
Something similar to the turkey tracks design appears at the top while the letters in the middle are bordered with an inverted "V" and chain stitch. There are also stylized designs added in the upper right hand corner and at the end of the alphabet as well.
The frame was fashioned from pine and attractively boasts two knots on the front. One on the top of the frame and the other on the lower left hand side. The warm walnut color tempered with a sorrel hue is a perfect dynamic for the artwork inside. There are small holes in the wood that may have been added to distress the frame. I am not certain as to the age of this frame and it may not be original to this piece. There is impressive black molding on the inside of the frame that really makes this stunning sampler stand out! Mitered corners joined by tiny nails make this frame strong and durable. The sampler is secured under glass.
The back is covered in black matte paper and there are two round felt circles attached at the opposite ends of the bottom portion. The wire hanger is secured by two eye hooks.
This wonderful piece of Totoki's handi~work reflects beauty, skill and charm. What a fabulous piece to decorate your home, especially during the holidays, that will be a focal point for anyone who enters the room! Compliments will follow! :) Enjoy!
