This jug at first glance appears to be made from wood and partly this is true but in reality it was fashioned from a wood fiber and resin composite. This process was used in the late 19th century as it was cheaper than turning wood on a lathe to fashion pieces such as this example.
There are various cracks (small and large) at random throughout the body as shown. The bottom is separate from the jug and so is the applied handle. A varnish was used over the entire piece that lends a red hue especially when a sunny room effects it’s appearance otherwise this piece exhibits a dark surface. At one point this jug may have held either liquor or wine. I added a wooden stopper and even though this is a marriage it was a good fit and the jug now has more of a complete look.
This jug would be perfect displayed in a tavern setting and is a great alternative to the more common stoneware jugs that are readily available. I have never seen an example such as this one and it certainly is a survivor! This piece still displays well and can also be placed on a bucket bench to give respite to your bucket collections. Enjoy!
Overall height is 13 ¼” tall including the stopper, measures 7” across the middle including the handle and measures 5 ½” across the bottom.
