Why not delight your homestead with these primitive Halloween ~ Autumn ribbed black stockings that would be perfect hanging from either a mantle or shaker peg rack! They are frightfully fun and are an extra long size that you don't commonly see.
These are in excellent condition and it appears that they have only incurred light washing, if any. The mark, "Guaranteed Seamless Hercules", is stamped on the underside of one foot only and I was able to find just a little information that may help date these stockings.
As referenced in image 9, there was an ad run in the Montreal Gazette dated May 21st, 1915, (third from the bottom), for a pair of "Hercules Boys Stockings Strongest made to fit and fit to wear, wide ribbed black pair" for the cost of .25 cents! I could not find any more information about this company as far as when the business started or ended.
The wide ribbing on theses beauties is wonderful and I believe they are made of cotton. I added some fall decorations to the top that include a dried quince slice, wee gourd and two eerie dried turnips for a unusual primitive look. These decorations were stitched on and can easily be removed if you choose to.
I had some old tweed wool that was added to the heels in a wonderful bittersweet and nutmeg color as shown in image 4. This was hand ~ stitched onto the heel with old wool thread and can be removed by clipping the thread if you wish, after the season is over. Black is such a fabulous neutral color that incorporates well with our primitive color palette especially with textile collections!
These long stockings come with a hanger I fashioned from old wool thread. They can be adored in your beautiful homestead to suit either Autumn or Halloween decorating set out near a crackling fire awaiting a friendly witch or two! Enjoy!
Each stocking measures a generous 22 1/2" Tall included foot measurement by 2 1/2" across the ribbed area.
