Lovely white cut work embroidered marking sampler dating from the late 19th to early 20th century showing vivid crimson and white thread that appear in random blocks against a paperwhite linen ground. This nicely worked textile is quite festive for holiday decorating. Wrought in either Europe or in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland region. Cutwork is a form of whitework where small sections of the ground fabric are cut away. The open area is edged with stitches and, depending on the type of cutwork, may be filled with other stitches. A pattern was used to work this textile as shown behind some of the white stitches lending a light blue color mark.
It appears a raised stem stitch was used along with a back stitch worked with cotton thread. The initials may portray “FK”? Delightful floral motifs grace the opposing bottom corners exercising a gentle curve. Further design enhancements include a border pattern consisting of an inverted “V”. Some dark stains are present throughout but mostly confined to the bottom opposing corners. Vibrant sampler is in good overall condition without any holes to report and shows well.
The frame is unusual because it still retains the period floral paper used on the back of the wood. Frame appears to be fashioned from a maple veneer and has experienced some loss as shown in image 25, 29 and 34 . Warm and rich appearance in the wood make a great companion to this textile housed inside protected under glass.
Perfect displayed with a feather tree along with other holiday favorites that will add ambiance and warmth to your home. Enjoy!
