Unique mid-19th century pine divided valuable box showing mellow salmon paint and strong graphics. Box comprised of square nail construction combined with dovetailing features as well as machine cut screws. Lovely lamplight black monogram on the front appears to be hand done calligraphy. Further detail includes stenciling on the front, back and top panels.
Lid terminates leaving one quarter of the top open revealing a separate compartment. Extended eye hook protruding above the accepted notched lid once accommodated a removeable lock. The screw is missing that joins the forged iron strap at the top location. Lid shows warped corners. Some expected paint loss along with a detached knot hole located on the bottom. Inside color reflects the original crimson red paint.
Probably a one of a kind piece that lends a nice smaller size which offers great display opportunities including adding a tree in the open compartment for holiday decorating.
Measures 16 ¼” across, stands 5 ¼” tall (including lid) and measures 6” deep. Inside measures 11” across, 4” tall and 4 ½” deep. Smaller compartment measures a little over 3” across, measures 4” tall and is 4 ½” deep.
