Unique crested salt box that possibly had early intentions of a candle box referencing the large size dating from the mid-19th century. Fashioned from pumpkin and white pine having flavorful patina showing a slanted doweled lid. Bottom was probably replaced at one point due to corrosive salt contact.

Replacement helper nails are present along with the originals. Dark areas near the bottom due to salt coming in contact with the wood. Tight age cracks appear at random along with some separation to the bottom panel. Impressive crested top back panel adds a nice decorative element having a downward curved pattern. i.e. whales tail except for loss on the third segment (right hand side). Some wood loss visible below the hole used for hanging.

Great storage piece that shows well and possesses wonderful form.

Measures 16” @ the tallest point back middle location, measures 9 ½” across the front and is 8 ½” deep.
