Beautiful donkey pull toy that is most likely of German descent because of the stick leg construction with pegged in feet to the base. The greens and berries laying on the base as well as the bendable twig fence (that can be positioned at will) and small bottle brush tree are also included in this festive gathering.
Donkey’s coat showing some stains mimics the same material used on the German Putz sheep. He boasts glass eyes along with a hand painted nose and mouth (some loss to the nose). Mane and tail are intact. The black accents are quite striking against a cream-colored ground. This is the first pull toy donkey I have come across and consider him rare as I have not seen another to date.
I do not believe he ever came with a saddle, reins or a harness as there is no evidence to support this. I glued the notched feet to the base to secure him. Very good condition and shows well!
Festive greens and berries were added to the base and are removeable. He asked for a red collar as well as a red piece of string to replace the missing pull. Wooden base has a red border edge stripe while the other area consists of a warm hue. There is a stain in the middle of the base behind the greens as shown. All wheels move freely and there are no cracks or chips to report. The underside is not marked.
A sitting Santa would look perfect riding the donkey but I don’t have any available right now but can look around. This gathering makes for a nice display and would be a great addition to any Putz or German collection.
Overall height including the base to the top of the donkey’s ear is 6”, donkey stands 5 ¼” @ the tallest point (tip of ear), measures 6 ½” nose to tail, measures ½” across his rump. Base measures 6 ½” across, stands ¾” tall and measures 2 ¼” front to back. Fence measures 9” across and is 2” tall. Bottle brush tree stands 3” tall and the base measures ½” across the bottom.
