Unusual 19th century tobacco cutter / scraper having a forged blade is accompanied by a tobacco twist and clay pipe that are also included. This cutter may also have been used as a scraper tool as the form is unique and has a similar appearance to a Child’s sock stretcher. Hand carved including a notch where the blade was inserted at the top location. Copper nails are probably a replacement therefore considered to be a “Make – Do” repair. Nice patina lending a darker surface near the top front location.
There is an area on the back indicating a rough appearance in the wood. There are also two very small holes located in the lower middle section on the front and the back as shown. Another rough area can be found on the bottom of the handle. Tight age related cracks appear at the top under the blade as well as on the handle that has experienced chips on the edge and back locations.
Tobacco twist and clay pipe that I antiqued are contemporary. 🤎Perfect for an early tavern look!
Cutter stands 12” tall, measures 3 ¼” across the top (blade), measures 4 ¾” across the bottom handle and is 1” deep (front to back). Clay pipe stands 5” tall and the bowl measures ¾” across the opening. Twist stands 6” tall, measures ¾” across the top and measures 1” across the bottom (widest point).
