Antique Pennsylvania Overshot Coverlet - Sunrise & Star Pattern

🇺🇸 A spectacular survivor of 19th-century Pennsylvania textile artistry, this authentic geometric overshot coverlet dates from the 1830s to the 1850s. Masterfully hand-loomed in a striking tricolor palette, it features rich indigo-blue and madder-red home-spun wool pattern threads floating over a natural cream cotton foundation warp.

The design is a highly complex variation of the historic "Sunrise and Star" (also known as "Governor's Garden") pattern family, showcasing intricate star medallions framed by crisp, contrasting checkerboard blocks. This piece features a beautifully aligned, hand-stitched center seam—the hallmark of narrow early American looms—and retains its magnificent, separately woven multicolored hand applied tape fringe along the borders.

Applied Tape Fringe Evidence: Look closely at the structural border running vertically down the left side and horizontally along the bottom. You can see a distinct, dense, narrow band of woven fabric—known as a fringe tape—that acts as the anchor for the fringe loops. This tape was hand-sewn onto the raw edges of the finished coverlet panels after they were taken off the loom. This technique was intentionally used to hide and stabilize the raw, cut ends of the cotton warp threads, preventing the main blanket from unraveling.

Notice how the fringe perfectly alternates blocks of red, blue, and cream wool threads. Weaving a multicolored fringe directly out of the side edges of a standard loom is incredibly difficult because the side edges (selvages) are made of the long, continuous warp threads running only one direction. Creating a matching, three-color loop pattern required weaving the fringe strip independently on a specialized narrow tape loom first.

Condition Report

This heirloom textile is in strong, structurally sound antique condition with no holes or fading. It features a wonderful, historic hand-stitched "make-do" repair along the lower center seam. This period mend adds incredible folk-art character, telling the honest story of a cherished family textile that was preserved, utilized, and mended with care through the generations.
