This late 19th century interesting wall version Comb and Brush tin box boasting deep mustard paint awaits a bathroom where it can be displayed. An old shaving brush and “Gillette” razor along with dried flowers are included and look great tucked inside the pockets.
The box is in overall good condition with some traces of paint loss as expected with age. The warm mustard paint is delightful and the primitive surface on this piece could not be better! The true color can be seen in the first picture as the other images are lighter creating a false salmon hue. The two upper pockets have been filled with dried flowers and the original mirror is set back against scalloped edges. The mirror does possess wavy straight lines but can only be seen at a certain angle. A small amount of light haze as well as a smattering of dark specks and tiny lines in the mirror are limited to the outer edge areas. There are no chips or cracks to report.
The words, “Comb and Brush” done in raised letters grace the front of the pocket while the rest of the tin has indented areas lending a concise mosaic pattern. See image 7 (back) for more detail. The crimped edges add stylized character while the gentle scalloped edge terminates to a soft scroll design. All of the metal tabs are accounted for. The back has small areas of “accident paint” and there is a tiny white circle near the right (upper) indented scallop. The bottom is not painted but does have an area of streaking paint that matches the existing mustard color. The box is free of rust.
The shaving brush is interesting because the soft badger hair has a prominent chocolate brown circle against a buttermilk ground. The shiny ferrule holds the hair securely to the wooden base that shows areas where the stain has worn off. The old “Gillette” brass razor may be missing the bottom top plate and part of the handle as well. The wear is consistent with age.
This great ensemble will outfit your bathroom with ease creating a period look that all can enjoy! Don’t forget the shaving mug!
