Antique Carved Duck Decoy Unusual Form Primitive Dark Brown Paint

#373

Regular price $58.50

This unusual Duck Decoy has interesting form and is a nice size. The dark chocolate brown paint is very appealing and really speaks to our primitive side!

Duck Decoys have interesting history that started when the early settlers arrived in North America. The natives were using mud and bulrushes along with other materials to create imitation ducks or fowl. The decoys were used to attract live birds for food. Decoys were made to look like various migratory water birds. However more duck decoys were produced because ducks were more plentiful.

Most of the decoys were fashioned from white cedar because it held up better than other woods and was also buoyant in the water.

This working primitive decoy was made around 1930~40's and has so much charm. The hand ~ carved surface is bumpy which lends desirable character and so does the squatty form! Her tail dips upward and is another unique feature. The head is removable and can just be lifted off at will. A dowel is revealed underneath and keeps the head secure but can also be positioned to your liking by turning it either to the right or left. She, I am calling her that because she reminds me of a hen of all things, does have a couple areas where the paint is missing as shown in image 14. There is also some wear on the tail as well, see images 7 & 8.

The bottom weight has been removed before I received it so it can be set on a flat surface with ease. This decoy is very well made and would love to fly off to your homestead! You could place her in a cupboard, on the fireplace mantle or even create a fabulous display on a farmhouse table accented with gourd eggs and dried Prairie grass! She is sure to please and will delight you and your homestead! Enjoy!

The duck measures 11" across from the tail to the front chest, stands 4 3/4" tall including the head measurement, 2 3/4" tall in the middle of his body & 5 1/2" across from front to back in the middle.

~Freight (Standard Mail) included, however Insurance is optional and can be purchased @ checkout ~ within the continental U.S.
