Antique Primitive Heart Chopper / Scraper Late 19th Century

I just love this unique Heart shaped Chopper that is scarcer then hens teeth to find and very ~sought after~! This is the kind of piece you can sometimes catch a glimpse of in books. Some call this a chopper because of the chamfered edge in the blade and others call it a Scraper. It actually can suit both purposes but it would seem a little arduous to use as a chopper because the vertical handle is in the wrong position, compared to the horizontal handles used on the double blade choppers.
This piece has roots stemming from Europe and the question is whether or not these Heart Choppers were ever actually made here. I have never seen a heart shape like this one boasting two little off shoot points located at the top indent of the heart!
This is a Smithy made, hand ~ forged piece and is quite heavy. The carbon steel blade has a wonderful heart cut out design in the middle and the two pronounced notched ends that extend upward from the bottom blade used for chopping or scraping. The handle is made of a hardwood and has a nice warm color and a smooth surface from being gripped and used during the years.
This blade does have some scratch marks and dark spots throughout consistent with age. No visible pitting or cracks are apparent. The great dark patina on this blade is just what you would like to see on a piece this old.
The ferrule, i.e. a metal cap that holds the blade and the wood handle in place was fashioned from brass which is a very common characteristic on pieces such as these. As shown in image 7, there is a tiny vertical line in the ferrule which is lighter in color compared to the rest of the ferrule which is much darker in color.
There is a small tight crack on the handle just above the ferrule. A tiny chip is also present on the handle in the front located near the right hand side as shown in image 6.
Overall this piece is in great condition and boasts a charming heart design that is not only appealing but adds a touch of whimsy to any homestead! This chopper would look awesome placed on a large breadboard lending charming results or can be propped up to show off the folksy hand crafted design with the heart detail in mind! Great addition to your early kitchenware collection! Enjoy!
The chopper stands 10 1/4" tall, measures almost 5 1/4" across the widest point @ the bottom & is 3 1/2" across the top. The handle is about 1 1/4" thick near the top and tapers down to 3/4" near the bottom.
~Freight (Standard Mail) included, however Insurance is optional and can be purchased @ checkout ~ within the continental U.S.
