Cup and Saucer English Spatterware with Quilt Block and Flags

Regular price $29.95

This pretty cup and saucer was hand decorated by applying a sponge technique that is characteristic of a spongeware pattern. This set dates to the 1890’s and was made in the Staffordshire district of England intended for export to America. The flags are also included in this sale and so is the bold quilt block.

Spatterware produced in Staffordshire fulfilled a need by offering inexpensive, every day dinnerware boasting a visual design that was hard to resist. A simple band done in a deep cornflower blue encompasses the edge of the saucer while a stylized leaf interpretation resides just below capturing a deep burgundy hue. The cup is reversed using the same color palette. The saucer is marked on the bottom location, “Royal Ironstone China” ~ England”.

There are no chips or cracks to report as this set is in fine condition. A couple areas on the cup have experienced an accidental mishap where the paint made contact on the sides noted as horizontal lines. The saucer appears to have escaped this incident. Gentle crazing is consistent throughout and both pieces make for a nice display.

I incorporated a “churn dash” quilt block dating to the late 19th century exhibiting an array of blue calico’s along with cozy polka dots. This textile grounds the cup and saucer ensemble by creating a unique statement for a table. It was machine pieced and has a slightly darker appearance on the triangles that appear on the edges. One tiny (size of a pin head) stain is apparent near the point of the triangle block but no other areas were affected. There are no holes or rips to report and the edges were left unfinished.

You can tuck this in a small cupboard or it can also be presented on a small table or counter in your kitchen. Reasonably priced and offers holiday cheer anywhere of your choosing! Enjoy!

Overall height is 3 ½” tall, cup with flags stand 3 ½” tall, measures 2 ½” across the top and measures 1 ¼” across the bottom. Saucer measures 4 ¾” across, stands almost 1” tall (outside edge) and measures 2” across the bottom. Quilt block measures 10 ¾” by 11”.
