Hooked Rug and Tole Painted Coffee Pot Tulip Motif

#808

Regular price $125.50

One of the favorite flowers of the Pennsylvania Dutch are the tulips as they symbolize an everlasting and ongoing cycle in life attributed to faith as these spring flowers continue to grow underground all year long. Beautiful pieces of folk art can be attributed to this flower worked into a variety of mediums by the Pennsylvania Dutch that are sought after by collectors even today. As we look forward to spring I thought this next offering would lend charm and color to your homestead sprinkled with Pennsylvania charm.

This hooked rug can also be used as a mat because of the size or can even be leaned vertically against a wall. I am not sure of the age as it may be a contemporary piece. The colors are both vibrant and strong. This carefully hooked rug does have a folk art appearance that is simple in form but yet very effective sporting the bold tulip design. A buttercup yellow center is accented by crimson red with a sneaky, deep cornflower blue highlight inside the petal. Avocado green wool was the primary color used for the stem and leaves while two opposing triangle squares located on the top corners excite us with even more color featuring a new design element. The neutral oatmeal ground allows these colors to pop and confirm the designs without question.

This rug is interesting as it has a pocket feature located at the bottom that accommodates a thick piece of cardboard which was placed inside. The back of the pocket area sports a beautiful floral design fabric that was handstitched to the rug on only three edges allowing for the opening of the pocket feature. The rug was expertly done and is in very good condition without any holes, rips or stains to report.

This darling, smaller version of a tin coffee pot that possibly dates to the 1930 to 40 period is as cute as a button! The strong color values of paint applied by a skilled artist using a brush stroke of whimsy creating both a tulip and folk art thistle design are wonderful. Classic tole painted comma strokes tease us with an array of interpreted folksy leaf motifs using splashes of buttercup yellow and grassy green hues that are as fresh as a warm spring day. There are also floating comma’s that hold high regard just above the tulips adding importance and whimsy at the same time. The wooden handle has also been painted a lamplight black color in keeping with the neutral undertones.

The hinged lid when opened reveals a shiny surface inside near the top but the bottom does have signs of surface rust. The bottom also has a shiny surface as it was not painted. There is a small dent on the outer rim of the bottom edge as shown in image 22. Three dents are also located at the top of the lid as referenced in image 17. There are also tiny areas of paint loss on the top just below the finial (knob) as well as sprinkled throughout the entire piece at random. The handle does not seem to be affected as the paint is consistently intact.

We are waiting with anticipation for our tulips that we planted last year in the fall to come up dotting our landscape with vibrant color! In the meantime, we can all decorate the inside of our homes with spring accents like this gathering that will certainly lift our spirits until this season arrives. This duo presented together has a special look but can also be separated as well. The hooked rug would be a wonderful accent for a candlestand or even a cricket bench laid on top. The coffee pot could reside on a shelf in your kitchen quite nicely or even on a window sill sprinkled with potted faux tulips placed nearby. You will have fun incorporating these lovely pieces into your home that will create a cheerful and happy environment for you and your homestead! Enjoy!

Hooked rug measures 9” across and measures 8” top to bottom (vertically). Coffee Pot stands 5 ½” tall (including the finial), measures 2 ¾” across the top, measures 5 1/5” from the end of the pouring spout to the end of the handle and measures 3 ½” across the bottom.
