This unusual mortar and pestle is such a delight because it does not take up much space and happens to exhibit a circular form that resembles a shallow bowl sporting a pronounced rim ledge. The surface on the mortar as well as the pestle lends a warm nutmeg hue that equates to exciting patina.
Both of these pieces are in great condition without any chips or cracks to report. The subdued foot on the base of the mortar presents a nice feature. The pestle rests perfectly inside the mortar and is probably original. The incised double bands on the handle that lend a dark appearance are a wonderful contrast to the lighter wood surrounding this area. This pestle has a gentle bell shaped bottom and portrays a hand whittled (gouge) appearance from use as shown in images 8 through 10, compared to the smooth handle counterpart. There are a couple dark areas present on the pestle as noted in the above referenced images.
The bottom of the mortar shows several areas that have a dark appearance along with small holes. Just above the foot where the bottom of the bowl is located there appears to be a dark circular ring as shown in images 5 through 7 that lends extra character to the bowl. Light and dark color attributes are also present throughout the surface which is an indication of how this piece aged though the years and equates to “yummy patina” as shown in images 2, 3 & 4!
This interesting mortar and pestle can call home anywhere of your choosing and will certainly add charming character incorporated among your other kitchen antique pieces! Don’t forget to add greens placed either inside or around the base to capture Christmas magic bringing enchanting flavor into your kitchen for the holidays.
