Mortar Bowl and Pestle Antique Unusual Form Neat

Regular price $65.50

Mortar and Pestle sets are the "country rave" and have everyone, including me scurrying around to acquire yet another set to satisfy our ever growing collections. As luck would have it, I was able to find four Mortar and Pestles all unique and different that would be a great addition to any pantry. This next offering is unique in form, style and has a pleasing, simple look.

The bowl shaped mortar is out of round and has been turned as indicated in image 2 & 3 & 5. The dark chocolate brown surface has true wear especially on the edges and bottom. The convex shape at the top edge is pronounced and tapers down to the remaining portion of the bowl which is a wonderful feature. Image 4 shows a hairline crack at the top edge that is about 1" long. There are also six tiny holes located on the outside near the edge but have not reached the inside of the bowl. A small crack can also be found on the back side of the bowl but does not come through to the inside.

The inside surface is more of a dry attic finish with precise circular marks left behind from the turning process. Several small chips are located on the outermost edge but have darkened which is a sign this happened long ago.

The pestle has appropriate scribe markings on the uppermost portion of the handle and also in the middle. The top of the handle has a bulbous shape that gently contours down. A soft, light nutmeg color is consistent throughout and this pestle compliments the bowl quite nicely as it may be a "marriage". There is some wonderful grain to this piece and the surface wear is "honest and true" as shown in image 6.

This unusual set of treen is also versatile because the mortar bowl can be turned over as the wear is that good, to either tuck in a cupboard or lay upright on a small shelf. Enjoy!

Mortar Bowl stands 3" Tall, 5 3/4" across the top opening, protrudes out to about 6 1/2" & bottom measures 3". The pestle stands 8 1/2" Tall, measures 1 1/4" across the bottom & 1 1/8" across the widest part at the top.
