Pennsylvania Redware Flower Pot Mid-19th Century Gorgeous

#775

Regular price $395.50

Once in awhile you come across a fabulous find that is not only exciting and superb but in excellent condition as well! This fantastic redware flower pot boasting bright, burnt orange hues along with a delicious manganese splash decoration and stylized ruffled edges……well it just doesn’t get any better than this!

This piece dates from the 1840 to 1860’s and is in fine condition which is a rarity! The flower pot has roots stemming from Bucks County, Pennsylvania and even has a removable under-tray which is also a neat feature. The crimped outer rim on the top of the pot is a wonderful design element and so is the pie crimped, i.e. ruffled edge shown on the under-tray as well as enhancing the top.

A large footed base adds a further design element while allowing stability when resting in the under-tray counterpart. The form is quite pretty as the well-defined and graduated inward curve located towards the bottom makes a distinct navigation diversion that renders a flared out base. The inside is clean and does not have any built up of water or dirt residue. However the bottom of the pot where the inside hole is located does appear to be a little darker in color as shown in images 14 & 15. The bottom also exhibits areas of white on the surface as referenced in image 16.

There are several places where tiny elongated and round pieces of clay protrude the surface that the potter may have missed as shown in images 9 through 12. No chips or cracks are present in this flower pot. However the under-tray has two small chips, one under the ruffled area and one located on the bottom edge as shown in images 19 & 20 referenced by the arrow. A manufacturing flaw is also present on the inside of the under-tray as referenced in image 17.

I filled this piece with an array of dried flowers (that are not included) but this does at least give you an idea of a unique decorating possibility this lends beauty to the overall look. Of course, a potted herb plant such as Rosemary or even colorful mums for the autumn season would enhance this piece by creating a beautiful focal point either resting on a plant stand or a side table. Redware pots such as this one are hard to come by especially in great condition…… so don’t hesitate to call this special piece your own! Enjoy!

Flower pot and under-tray stand 7 ¼” tall, flower pot alone stands 6 ¾” tall, measures 7” across the top (right to left) and measures 4 ¼” across the bottom footed section. Redware under-tray measures 5 ¼” across the top diameter (right to left), measures 5” across the bottom (right to left) and stands 1 ½” tall.
