I recently found this fabulous primitive divided carrier at market and decided to add some sewing items to create an unusual gathering I hope you enjoy. This offering includes, a vintage Scotty dog, Old Jar of buttons, an old sock darner and a "Make ~ Do" Magnolia Pod Pin Cushion I made.
The carrier is a nice size, not too large and has the most wonderful surface wear boasting deep rich browns and nutmegs enhanced with light and dark variations in the wood. This piece was certainly used and could have carried all kinds of things used for repairs. The back has age cracks that add so much character.
This carrier was joined together by round flat head nails and there is appropriate nail bleed in the surrounding wood. The back side of this piece has an opaque area of oyster grey paint and is limited to this piece of wood only. Dry Attic finish seems to prevail for the overall appearance. There is an extra little division inside the carrier where the sock darner can go. Really a special piece that screams primitive all the way!
"Spot", the Scotty dog was a recent find as well and he is absolutely adorable! I named him Spot because the fabric of choice used has circles sprinkled throughout that resemble spots! He is probably from the 20's or 30's and sports a plastic collar that did not manage to get lost. Good Boy, Spot! The colors in the fabric are strong and his hand stitched mouth done in black thread adds personality that really shines through! He has plastic eyes that are metaphorically loyal and friendly!
The crimson red fabric with random buttermilk colored solid circles should be a hit with most as he is very cheerful and gay looking! His little tail and ears stands erect and he is ready to make your acquaintance! This handsome guy is in very good condition without any tears, rips or stains to report. There are no offensive odors present and Spot is very soft and cuddly too! :)
I found some old buttons in primitive colors that I added to a slender old glass ribbed jar. I used a piece of old wool from my favorite cutter quilt and added this on top as a cover, wrapped with aged string. The jar is in excellent condition free of any cracks or chips in the glass.
The sock darner has a warm, maple hue and does not have any issues to speak of. Great condition! Lastly, I found a dried Magnolia Pod and made a little pin cushion out of it. I stitched X X X's on a strip of aged burlap and attached this to the wool used underneath. String was wrapped on the stem for an unusual primitive look. The pins are included.
This carrier is so versatile that you can also use it in your pantry or buttery filled with small wooden bowls, butter stamps & paddles, tin cookie cutters or pieces of homespun with olde Lye Soap. Just an unusual offering that I hope will delight you and your homestead for a long time! Enjoy!
The carrier stands almost 3" Tall (not including the handle) & 4 3/4" with the handle measurement, 12" across the front, 8 1/2" Deep & the wood is about 1/2" Thick. The old jar of buttons stands 6" Tall, 3" across the top & 2 1/2" across the bottom. Sock Darner is 6 1/2" Long & about 1 1/2" across the largest point.
