Primitive Dry Measure and Pounder with Notched End

#723

Regular price $115.50

If you adore primitive woodenware pieces then this next offering is “tailor made” just for you! Even though these two pieces were found separately, I decided to pair them up by performing a wedding ceremony and they are anxious to have their honeymoon in your lovely home!

This wonderful dry measure is of the medium to smaller variety which is good news as it will not take up a large amount of space in your home. The luscious patina boasts a rich crushed walnut shell color with lighter highlights feathered in at random. The metal bands are honest and the dark color is certainly desirable! The staves are tight and do not have any play. There is slight wood loss near the bottom (just below the metal band) on the back but happened long ago as the dark color can attest, referenced in image 8.

This measure is marked with a letter and numbers……”R 15”  “16” & "17" as shown in images 3 & 4 but lacks a makers mark. Normal wear including some scratches along with slight indentations are present and really add character to this neat piece.

I have never had the pleasure of meeting a wooden pounder such as this one and was excited when I found it! Very curious piece as the notched end signifies that it was used in a bowl to secure itself from the top edge. The bulbous form says “Hello” immediately and this heavy kitchen tool was used often as the handle is smooth as silk. Some may also call this a masher but I think we can all agree as far as what it was supposed to do……crush, mash or even pound various foods, herbs, etc.

There is an age crack located at the bottom that works its way up to both sides as shown in images 19, 20 & 21. The beautiful patina that resembles a deep nutmeg hue is not only warm but delicious. There are exciting dark and light areas on the wooden surface that create interest and of course add plenty of unique character too! This pounder was carved out of one piece of wood and the workmanship is keen!

This set would love to grace your pantry in style seasoned with primitive charm that will lend a fabulous look. Don’t forget the sunscreen for their honeymoon! Enjoy!

The measure stands 5 ¼” tall, measures 7 ¼” across the top (right to left) and the bottom measures 6 ¾”. Wooden pounder stands 9 ½” tall, to notch measures 1” by 1 ½”, bottom measures 2 ¾” across (right to left).
