Meet “Harvey”, a very special rabbit that is hard to find! He has impeccable breeding as Harvey is an authentic creation from “Arnold Print Works, North Adams, Massachusetts” along with his birth date of “October 4th, 1892”. I named him after the wonderful movie portraying a 6 foot tall 3” white rabbit (“pooka”) called “Harvey” released on “December 21st, 1950”, featuring James Stewart.
Arnold Print Works purchased animal designed doll patterns that originally consisted of monkeys, dogs, cats and rabbits from Celia and Charity Smith. These were printed on sheets that cost 20 cents each using lithographic printers. Example of a later hen and chicks pattern referenced in image 21. The buyers responsibility would entail cutting out the pattern along with sewing and stuffing. Even though there is a date stamped on the bottom of this rabbit it does not necessarily mean that it was assembled at that time. Therefore this piece is rather hard to date as far as when it was completed.
Harvey has vibrant printed colors on his fur and face lending a variety of nutmeg, black and sorrel hues on a buttermilk ground without any fading to report. He has plenty of personality gesturing adoring eyes and a cute nose. His standing posture allows his two front paws to stay close to his body while his erect ears can actually hear everything……. so be careful what you say! Harvey’s little feet are tucked in at the front bottom location and the detail of all his features captures this darling rabbit perfectly!
There are a couple of small stains on the front near the bottom, one on his neck as well as a couple more located on his backside referenced in images 4, 7 & 15. A tiny bit of stuffing can be seen on the inner side of his right ear near the bottom location as shown in image 9. There are signs that the stitches are too uniform when peeking at the seams and dictate machine stitching as referenced in image 19. Harvey is in overall great condition without any holes, rips or odors to report.
He is of the taller variety and will make his presence known. Perfect for display in a large basket along with other cloth animals and will surely be the life of the party! Enjoy!
Harvey stands 16 ¼” tall, measures 2 ½” across his ears, measures 6 ¾” across the middle section, measures 3 ½” across the bottom (part that actually touches the surface he is placed on) and is 2” deep (front to back).
