Rare German Fables Illustrated Book Christmas Gathering
Happy Holidays! This charming German book entitled, “Fabeln fur Kinder Fables”, (Fables for Children), by W. Hey, is rare and possesses beautiful etchings. It was illustrated by Otto Spechter and issued in Gotha, Germany, circa 1850 by Perthes. All of the text throughout this book is in German.
The cherished holidays seem to evoke fond memories of childhood and I think we can all attest that children’s items always play an integral part in our decorating because of the delightful and whimsical ambiance they lend. This sweet book that sports a brick red ground coincides with the green print on the front covers title which makes it perfect to set out for the holidays.
The illustrations in this book are just fabulous as animals, birds and children seem to be the inspiration for storytelling. My favorite is the barn swallows (see image 4 & 5) because we have them in our barn! The lion is also magnificent (image 15) as the detail this artist captured is profound!
This book is in good condition and all the pages are accounted for. There are some light age stains throughout the pages of the book. The person I purchased this from said she paid $70.00 for this German fable book years ago! No tears are present and there are no musty odors either. A darling old hand knit doll sock tied to brown homespun graces the cover sporting holiday cheer. I tucked a chenille candy cane near the sock and attached sweet Annie for a festive look. You can easily and carefully remove the homespun with the sock attached by gently pulling forward until it is off the book.
This sweet gathering can be tucked under a small Christmas tree with other old toys sprinkled about in a bedroom on top of a blanket chest or what about placing it with a grouping of other books and placing spectacles on top. This gathering would also make a nice gift too…if you can part with it! Enjoy!
The book measures 7 ¼” tall (vertical position), 4 ¼” across (right to left) and is ¼” thick. Adorable doll sock stands 4 ½” tall (from the top opening to the toe area and measures 1 ¼” across @ the widest point (heel to top of foot). Candy cane stands 6” tall.
