Pitchers such as this one enhanced with a colorful floral arrangement( also included) are just a wonderful piece to decorate with as they make for a happy display! This redware pitcher dates from around 1840 to 1850 and delights us with great form!
The spalling or flaking appearance (glaze loss) on the inside and outside surface suggests this piece was used as a container that held water probably for fresh flowers. In its defense the rich color in the redware mixed in with tiny dark specks are still terrific attributes. There is only one small, tight crack located on the bottom that cascades gently upward about 2” as shown in image 24.
A couple of “pops” can be found on the body, the largest also referenced in image 24. Four chips appear on the pronounced rim near the edge but are somewhat hard to detect because of the color and smooth appearance which suggests this mishap occurred long ago. The color could place this pitcher’s origin either in Ohio or New York but then again we can’t rule out Pennsylvania either.
I can envision this delightful pitcher filled with springtime flowers set on a deep window ledge, in the bedroom placed on top of a night stand or even enjoyed in the bathroom while soaking in the tub after a long hard day. Enjoy!
Overall height including flowers is 12”, pitcher itself stands 8” tall, measures 5” across the top opening, measures almost 4 ¾” across the bottom.
